Getting Into CBD – A Basic Guide

The world is ever-changing, the cycle of products or methods becoming inferior then eventually being replaced by a new discovery or technique is common and has been around for centuries. With semi-recent laws and bills being passed the wave of CBD should be embraced and studied fully for its medicinal properties.

CBD

Cannabis Sativa?

Marijuana is normally brought with negative connotations, even with states legalizing the drug for recreational purposes to the mass public over the age of 21. The first thing that comes to mind with most people when it comes to weed/marijuana is its “high” effects on the user. Stereotypes get thrown around calling anyone who uses marijuana as a stoner. While that may be its most popular use, even the recreational drug has medicinal effects on those with cancer and going through chemotherapy.

To read more about it visit the American Cancer Society on marijuana treatment.

While marijuana might be the most well-known form of the Cannabis sativa plant, but the other known as Hemp is something that has had huge strides over the years. People and companies have been making products out of Hemp for thousands of years.CBD

Ropes, textiles, paper can all be made from hemp while newer products such as fuel, and even protein powder. But one of the biggest outcomes of the Hemp plant in today’s society is the extraction of CBD. As a more organic method for certain treatments including pain and anxiety, it is being researched constantly for medicinal capabilities.

Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018

In 2018 congress made huge strides for hemp producers and consumers, legalizing certain forms of CBD. This legalization is also known as the Farm Bill and put simply it made it so CBD from Hemp plants with less than 0.3% THC is legal. However, CBD from Marijuana plants no matter what percentage of THC is still illegal federally.

Another important note from the legalization of the Farm Bill was the role that the FDA will play in gatekeeping CBD products that will able approved for the market. Since CBD is considered a drug ingredient the FDA will have the final say on all approvals for CBD products, even if the product doesn’t require a prescription to get. Be on the lookout for proper identification on CBD websites for FDA disclosures and other regulatory associations that have authority over CBD products.

Marijuana

Marijuana in society today has made huge strides from being something negative to being legalized in 11 states nationwide. The positive and negative effects of marijuana aren’t entirely researched and/or clear cut, being approved as a recreational drug is a success for the future of Cannabis Sativa goods. The Marijuana industry has made huge profits in states where is it legal, and some state governments are putting the tax money from marijuana into school systems and other infrastructural areas.

Hemp/CBD

Relatively new to the American market with research and actual availability, CBD still holds promising results for helping people with their everyday lives. Some of the most popular uses for CBD currently are for pain relief and for stress and/or anxiety. As mentioned earlier, marijuana is used for pain in chemotherapy, which is a promising effect for CBD. A study was published about the treatment of arthritis with CBM (cannabis-based medicine) that had CBD in it. The study found that the CBM worked on those who had arthritis.

If presented with two pictures, one of the marijuana plants and one of the hemp plants, it might be impossible to tell the difference with your eyes. To determine the difference, the chemical profiles of each plant are examined to see if the THC levels in the plant are above a certain threshold to consider it a marijuana plant.

Hempseed vs. CBD, what’s the difference

While browsing online looking for CBD products you might stumble upon other oils or topical products labeled ‘Hempseed” oil. They might both be from the Hemp plant, CBD and hempseed are not comparable to what they are used for. Hempseed products don’t have cannabidiols or CBD in them, meaning they won’t have the same medicinal effect that people are taking CBD for.

With the recent surge of CBD products going on the market, it is safe to check ingredients on products that claim to be CBD or have “medicinal properties” to them. Online shopping sites like Amazon, don’t sell products that have CBD in them. Even if the company claims that it does, make sure to check labels and do some research on your own. You will find Hempseed products on Amazon and other generic online shopping sites.

Now you might be thinking, why should I try CBD, or I have never used marijuana I don’t think I will like CBD. While they are both from the same base plant, you can be someone who has never touched weed in their life and still love CBD for its medicinal purposes. The two variations from cannabis can be mutually exclusive and should only be used if you are comfortable taking it.
