Sleep and CBD

Sleeping with CBD

One of the most important parts of every day is when it is finally time to go to sleep. You might be an early sleeper, a late riser, or somewhere in between. One thing that we can agree on is that sleep is vital for good health and a great way to recover from an exhausting day.

We have all had those days where you get up and feel ready to conquer the day, no matter what obstacles life throws at you. You might not know exactly why you feel that way, but you know that your good night’s rest was the most probable cause of it. So, why is sleep important?

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of NIH has a variety of online resources for improving your health. I will summarize some key points from their sleep deprivation and deficiency article.

Sleep plays a role in your overall good health and well-being. It can help your mental health, physical health, quality of life, and safety. “Sleep helps your brain work properly. While you’re sleeping, your brain is preparing for the next day. It’s forming new pathways to help you learn and remember information.”

If you suffer from sleep deficiency you might have an increased risk for heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke. Sleep is nothing to laugh at, and it is very crucial to get to bed early every night. Early might differentiate between people, trying to get a full 8 hours of sleep for adults. Many studies have found that completing the REM cycle during sleep is the key to feel well-rested. REM sleep first occurs after 90 minutes, while dreaming normally takes about 2 hours of your sleep during the night.

Without getting too deep into scientific terms on sleep, the sleep cycle, and more, sleep is one of the most important parts of balancing a healthy life. Lacking sleep can make you less productive at school or work. It might slow your reaction times and you might make more mistakes than normal. The human body functions on sleep and nutrients that we get from food, the sun, and other sources.

Generally, there a few things that can also help you sleep better at night, or initially falling asleep after a long day. Here are some tips that might help you.

  • Reduce your screen time before bed, about 15-30 minutes before bed get off your phone, tv, or computer.
  • Set a schedule on when you want to go to sleep and wake up every day.
  • Try a relaxing activity like mediation, reading a book, or something else before bed.
  • Make sure there are no bright lights or loud sounds in your bedroom.

Something that I have learned is that when you are just lying in bed and can’t fall asleep then it is more productive to read, listen to music, or something else that follows the rules until you are tired.

CBD and Sleep Research

I learned all these great things about sleep, now where does CBD come in? A study done by the Permanente Journal showed that CBD decreased sleep difficulties in many of the participants. They were given 25mg capsules of CBD, and they took the does in the evening before bed. In 66% of the participants, their sleep scores improved, suggesting that CBD helped those who had sleeping difficulties.

The endocannabinoid system, which was discussed previously here (Stress and CBD) has been discovered that it plays a role in sleep alongside mood and appetite. Research shows that ECS may affect the sleep/wake cycle with the CB1 and CB2 receptors. Sleep Association also says that “Additionally, CBD may also decrease anxiety and pain, which can both interfere with restful sleep. By reducing certain symptoms, it’s also possible that sleep may improve.”

Like many CBD research studies, there is supporting evidence and claims to be made. But more testing and research will need to be done for anything conclusive.
For those who suffer from sleep insomnia or those who currently take medication to help sleep make sure to talk to your doctors about using CBD to improve your sleep. Dosages may be varied for each person; it is important to try and change dosages until you find one that is right for you.
